Glencoe Software, the world-leading supplier of image data management solutions for academic, biotech, pharma and publication industries, is delighted to announce a new partnership with FEI, Inc. Glencoe Software's commercial license of Bio-Formats will be incorporated into FEI's market-leading Amira, a 3D image analysis software application.
FEI's Amira is a powerful, multifaceted 3D software platform for visualizing, manipulating, and understanding data from computed tomography, microscopy, MRI, and many other imaging modalities. Incorporating Bio-Formats' powerful image translation library into Amira enables users to use Amira regardless of their preferred platform or file type, making that step to visualizing, analyzing and understanding their data, quicker and easier than ever before.
Bio-Formats is an image file format translation library and is used in thousands of laboratories around the world to read >145 proprietary image file formats. Glencoe Software is the exclusive commercial partner of the OME Consortium and makes substantial contributions to the Bio-Formats project. Glencoe is dedicated to the continued development of this important tool for use by the biological and biomedical research communities.
In announcing the agreement, Christian Wietholt, Product Marketing Manager of Amira (FEI), said:
"We at FEI, and more specifically the Amira software team, strive to support all our customers' image analysis and visualization needs. This includes supporting as many file formats as possible for easy import of all life science image data. With the constant increase of file formats and format versions, it has become increasingly demanding to maintain support for the image data import needs of our customers. Thanks to the efforts of the OME community and Glencoe Software for providing and maintaining the Bio-Formats library, FEI can seamlessly integrate various additional file formats and updated support for the formats that are already part of Amira. Our team would like to thank the Glencoe Software engineers for their support during the integration of Bio-Formats as well as the OME community, and especially the members of the LOCI at the University of Wisconsin – Madison for their inspiration and tremendous help during this integration."
Dr. Jason Swedlow, Founder and President of Glencoe Software, Inc., said:
"I am delighted to announce this agreement with FEI for the commercial licensing of Bio-Formats for FEI's Amira software. The open source version of Bio-Formats is used by tens of thousands of scientists around the world to access their image data. With this commercial licensing agreement, Amira users can now access this same functionality, so they can view, process and analyze whichever images they want with Amira. While we are dedicated to supporting the open source availability of Bio-Formats, this agreement ensures that commercial organizations like FEI can access Bio-Formats as well. This is a strategic choice for OME and Glencoe, to make Bio-Formats as widely available as possible."
